Madigan Surveying was approached by “Museums Victoria” to produce a 3d laser scan model of the external facades and areas of the Melbourne Museum located at the Carlton Gardens.
The point cloud survey will form the basis of the future development of a Building Information Modelling (BIM) System for the management of the facility. This will assist multiple departments with the development and planning requirements. The area surveyed included the full surround of the Museum Complex, North Terrace, Childrens Garden, Forest Gallery, Milarri Garden, External Auditorium and the Lower ground courtyard areas.
A comprehensive survey control network was created surrounding the site which formed the basis of this survey and any future survey within the site. This network, containing over 60 coordinated points. They survey was conducted using a High Definition Laser Scanner (RTC 360) with over 400 scanning locations. All scans were completed in true colour in HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode. The scans were combined to produce a full colour model on a homogeneous datum.
